The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived” (CCC 1514). During the celebration of this Sacrament “the "priests of the Church" - in silence - lay hands on the sick; they pray over them in the faith of the Church - this is the epiclesis proper to this sacrament; they then anoint them with oil blessed, if possible, by the bishop” (CCC 1519).
Archdiocese of Denver handbook, Subjects of the Rite of Anointing:
5.6.4 Only those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age or are facing serious
surgery are proper subjects for the sacrament.
5.6.4.1. Ordinarily, those who are recovering from any form of chemical dependency do not qualify as subjects for this sacrament nor do those who suffer from acute or mental illness.
5.6.4.2. Those who once had the use of reason, but have subsequently lost their mental faculties due to senility, unconsciousness, mental illness or some other reasonshould be anointed.
5.6.4.3. A child is anointed if “he or she has sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by the sacrament of anointing”.
